The figures here are published national ranges from cost guides. They aren't quotes, we didn't measure them, and local prices vary. Use them to plan a budget, then get quotes from remodelers near you if you'd like to compare.
New cabinets
The cost guides give installed prices per linear foot for three grades of new cabinets.
| Cabinet grade | Published range |
|---|---|
| Stock | $100 to $300 per linear foot installed1-3 |
| Semi-custom | $150 to $650 per linear foot installed1-3 |
| Custom | $500 to $1,200 per linear foot installed1-3 |
For a whole kitchen, the cost guides also give one range.
| Job | Published range |
|---|---|
| Cabinets for an average kitchen | $4,000 to $15,0001-3 |
Your kitchen may be larger or smaller than the one these guides call average. Ask each remodeler how many linear feet of cabinets their price covers and which grade they're pricing, so you can compare quotes on the same job.
Refacing or painting
The cost guides also price refacing and painting a kitchen's existing cabinets.
| Job | Published range |
|---|---|
| Refacing a kitchen's cabinets | $4,000 to $13,0002, 4-5 |
| Refacing by the linear foot | $150 to $450 per linear foot2, 4-5 |
| Professional painting | $2,000 to $6,500 for a kitchen4, 6 |
Ask each remodeler what their refacing or painting price includes: which parts they replace, which they keep, and whether new hardware is in it.
Countertops
The cost guides give installed prices per square foot for countertops.
| Material | Published range |
|---|---|
| Laminate | $15 to $60 per square foot installed7-9 |
| Granite | $50 to $150 per square foot installed7-10 |
| Quartz | $50 to $200 per square foot installed7-8, 10 |
| Butcher block | $40 to $150 per square foot installed7-9 |
For a whole kitchen:
| Job | Published range |

| Countertops for a kitchen | $1,500 to $6,000, typically about $3,0008-10 |
| A kitchen backsplash | $500 to $1,700, averaging about $1,000; tile $15 to $40 per square foot11-13 |
Ask each installer how many square feet they measured, and whether removing the old countertop, cutting for the sink and cooktop, and the edge you pick are in the price.
The kitchen and bath cost estimator shows these ranges for the cabinets or countertops you pick. The kitchen remodel cost guide covers the rest of a kitchen remodel, and the verify guide shows where to check a remodeler's license or registration.
Comparing quotes
Ask every remodeler to put the same things in writing, so you can compare them line by line:
- For cabinets: new, refaced or painted; the grade; how many linear feet; and whether removing the old cabinets is in the price.
- For countertops: the material; how many square feet; and whether the backsplash is in the price.
- When the cabinets and countertops will be ordered and installed, and how long the kitchen will be out of use.
- How much of a deposit they want, and when the rest is due. The contracts guide covers what state rules say about deposits.
If one quote leaves an item out, ask for it to be priced before you compare. When you're ready, you can ask for quotes from remodelers near you.
